Viola Rocile Van Hoepen was born April 1, 1920, to Theodore and Grace (Nanninga) Pereboom in Chester, South Dakota. She attended school in Chester and graduated from Chester High School. After high school, Perry attended Sioux Valley Nurse's Training (now Sanford Hospital) in Sioux Falls. From there, she worked as a nurse in Minneapolis, Illinois, and Brookings.
Perry was united in marriage to Marion Van Hoepen in 1956. After their marriage, Marion and Perry worked alongside one another as business partners at Golden Sun Feeds in Volga for 35 years. As an appreciation to their customers, the couple hosted an annual open house known as Ham Days to hundreds of customers in the area.
In March of 1960, Perry's dream of becoming a mother came true with the adoption of a little girl from Seoul, South Korea. They named their daughter Dawn Kim and she was Perry's joy.
Perry had many passions in life, foremost was spreading the Gospel. In the summertime, she would host Backyard Bible Club for children. She will be remembered in her Volga neighborhood as Grandma Van Hoepen, because she would often bake cookies for all the children on the block. Perry enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, cooking, canning, baking, and playing the piano. She was known for her love of Snickers candy bars and would even hide them in her shoes. Perry was a member of the Volga Jolly Bunch Extension Club, Volga Lions Club, Volga American Legion Auxiliary, and RCW. She was a founding member of Holy Life Tabernacle, where she was a pianist for many years.
Above all else, Perry's greatest pride & happiness in life was being Nana to her 4 granddaughters, and later becoming a great grandmother to her 5 great grandchildren.
After the death of her husband Marion, Perry lived on her own until she was 96 years old when she suffered a debilitating stroke in 2016. She then moved into Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline until the time of her death. Blessed be her memory.
Survivors include her daughter Dawn Kim Van Hoepen, of Brookings; granddaughters, Tia (Paul) Schuster of Bemidji, MN; Kim (Jeremiah) Chleborad of Kansas City, MO; Tyann Ribstein of Sioux Falls, SD; and Mikayla Ribstein (Matt Padron) of Las Vegas, NV; 5 great grandchildren – Alaeyah, Veyda-Zarin, and Maddox Chleborad, Ethan and Eva Schuster; and sister-in-law Adriana Kleinjan; sister-in-law Wilma (Ron) Bjerke; brother-in-law Harold Van Hoepen (Carol); and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special "other daughter" Jeanne (Dave) Kaufman, of Brookings.
Perry was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Martha Schutt.
