While surrounded by family, Ellen "Kay" Hobbie, of Flandreau, SD, passed away peacefully at age 79, on December 11, 2020. In celebration of her life, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 15 th , 2-6:00 at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. Family will not be present. Wednesday, December 16 th at 1:00, join the family at www.eidsnessfuneralhome.com for a virtual memorial service or watch the recording at your convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established. Cards and memorials can be delivered or mailed to Eidsness Funeral Home at 1617 Orchard Drive, Brookings, SD 57006.
Kay was born in Rapid City, SD to Hugh & Mae Mills on March 17, 1941. At 8, she invited Jesus Christ into her heart. She graduated from Rapid City High School, continued her education at Miltonvale Wesleyan College, Miltonvale, KS and Mary Lanning School of Nursing, Hastings, NE.
In nursing school, she met the love of her life, Roger Hobbie. They were later married on May 1, 1964 in Rapid City. They lived on a farm near Flandreau, SD. Kay was a nurse at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD and worked at the College of Nursing, SDSU in Brookings until her retirement.
Member of Grace Point Church, Brookings, SD - Christian Education Director, Bible Bowl Coach, Hostess Team Leader. She was a board member, directed and chaired district and national organizations for church and Bartlesville Wesleyan College. Egan School Board, 4-H advisor & state fair judge. She started First Aid Kit Classes and "Why I want to be a nurse" essay contest.
Her greatest desire was to be more like Jesus. She spent time each day reading her Bible and praying for her family, community and world needs. She was a positive influence to many and instilled Christian values and scripture in her four children.
She enjoyed playing Scrabble, writing letters and encouraging notes, gardening, entertaining, traveling, camping and spending time with her husband, kids and grandkids.
Kay leaves behind her husband Roger Hobbie of Flandreau, SD; four children, Cheryl (Gary) Brown, Watford City, ND; Charla (Richard) Holt, Rapid City, SD; Chanda (Brian) Wahl, Red Lodge, MT; Chet (Angela) Hobbie, Wasilla, AK; brother, Jack (Jeannine) Mills, Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Vickie (Rick)Kilmer Goddard, KS; sister-in-law Peggy Mills Bartlesville, OK; numerous nieces, nephews, thirteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Hughie and Dean.
