Obituary

Robert Swanson died at age 92.  He was the third of four sons born to his parents.

After graduating from high school he attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, to receive a B.S. in Animal & Range Science.  Bob served in the Army during the Korean War.  He and his younger brother were stationed together during their tour of duty having enlisted in the Army the same day. While in the service he and Ruby were married in New York City.   They lived in Boston, Massachusetts, and Washington D.C.

When discharged from the service Bob took advantage of the G.I. Bill by continuing education at K.S.U. in Manhattan, Kansas.  He earned a DVM (Doctor of Veterinary) M.S. and PhD, majoring in Physiology with a minor in Bio-Chemistry.  Bob was Department Head of Physiology of Veterinary Medicine in Manhattan and served on Board of KSU Teachers Employment & Insurance, and  on Board of Director of Sigma Xi.

They moved to Brookings, S.D., where he taught Anatomy, Physiology of Anatomy, Physiology of Livestock, Mammalian Physiology plus graduate courses at SDSU.   He retired as Professor Emeritus.When on the faculty he was recognized as Outstanding Educator of America, served as President of Gamma Signa Delta, advisor to SDSU Pre-Veterinary Club, co -advisor of Rodeo Club (he and Ruby traveled with the team many weekends) and advisor to Block & Bridle Club as well as University Veterinarian.

Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church having served on numerous communities and Methodist Men Group for many years.  He was co-leader of Boy Scout Troop 14, joining his sons on many backpacking trips and to National Jamboree in Idaho, thus encouraged his sons who both earned Eagle Scout award.

After retiring Bob became active in Golden K and Optimist Club.  He assisted the Optimist city wide display of flags and volunteered at Brookings High School Optimist Concession Booth for many years as money from this helped various youth group in the community.

He is survived by his wife Ruby and their three children, Steve, Kimberly (Michael), Rich (Connie) and six grandchildren:  Sam, Sarah (Zach), Max, Joey, Hannah (Luke), Tyler and two great grandchildren Jack and Vivienne.

Visitation to be scheduled at a later date, and as will the burial.  Burial will be in his hometown in Southwest Kansas.
