Obituary

Zora R. Colburn, age 96, of Brookings, died Sunday, February 25, 2007, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Memorial services will be 1:30 P.M. Saturday, March 3, 2007, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery at Madison, South Dakota. There will be no visitations. Memorials may be directed to the Zora Colburn Scholarship at the SDSU Foundation. Zora Ruth Colburn was born November 21, 1910, at Madison, South Dakota, to John Henry and Laura T. (Rohm) Colburn. She lived on a ranch in Montana until 1917 when the family moved to Madison. From 1922 until 1928 they lived in Appleton, Wisconsin, where Zora graduated from high school. She attended Eastern Normal school until 1930, and received a bachelor of science degree from SDSU in 1942 and a master of science degree in 1954. She attended summer school at universities in Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado, and Columbia Teachers College in New York City. Zoras teaching career began in 1931 at Franklin Consolidated School in Madison. She taught in DeSmet from 1931 until 1940, Milbank from 1942 until 1946, Ellensburg, Washington, from 1946 until 1947, Mitchell from 1947 until 1955, when she began teaching at SDSU. She retired as a professor at SDSU in 1976. Zora served on the SDSU Presidents Advisory Board, the Faculty Senate, and was active in several professional and academic organizations. including the American Association of University Professors, South Dakota High School Activities Association, Brookings Area Retired Teachers Association, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Phi. She was as Outstanding Teacher by the Alumni Association in 1968, and the College of Home Economics in 1972 and 1976. She was involved in IRS tax counseling for the elderly from 1978 until 1999 and was the coordinator for Brookings and Moody Counties from 1982 until 1985. She enjoyed extensive travel, needlework, gardening, and reading. Survivors include her brother, J. Duane (Eunice) Colburn, of Hendricks, Minnesota; a niece, Sharilyn Younger; and nephews, Kent Younger, Zoell Colburn, Lorre Colburn, and John Colburn. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Beryl Younger; and a nephew, Lee Colburn.
