Zena Hartley, age 81, of Brookings, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Brookview Manor. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment in Fairview Cemetery at White. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Zena Ann (DeVries) Hartley was born September 7, 1931, in Deuel County, South Dakota, to Allen and Ruth (Mooney) DeVries. She attended country school near Toronto and Astoria. On December 20, 1952, she married George Hartley at Hendricks, Minnesota. The Hartleys lived in Huron for a brief time and several locations in Brookings County before moving to Brookings in 1969. Zena was employed as a housekeeper and worked the Prairie and Dakota Inn restaurants in Brookings. George died December 10, 1993. Zena had been a member of the United Methodist Church in White, where she was baptized on April 21, 1957, along with her three children. She enjoyed having coffee and spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her three children: Ruth Hartley of Brookings, David Hartley of Whitewood, South Dakota, and Gloria Jensen of Volga; grandchildren: Nick Hartley, Chad, Matthew, and Angela Hartley, and Jamey, Jeff, Jesse, and Jenna Jensen; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Eva Selleck, of Brookings, and a brother, Steve DeVries of Box Elder, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Allen "Pete" DeVries, Claus DeVries, and Wilbur Neville.
