Winston W. Wolpert, age 89, of Brookings, died Friday, January 7, 2011, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. Interment will take place in the spring at Spirit Lake Cemetery, rural DeSmet. Visitations will be from 4-6 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Ascension Lutheran Church or Lutheran Social Services.
Winston Wilbur Wolpert was born May 30, 1921, at Bismarck, North Dakota, to Otto George and Dorothea H. (Lippert) Wolpert. He attended country school in Allen Township and graduated from Steele High School in 1939. He received a B.A. degree from Concordia College of Moorhead, Minnesota, and a masters degree from South Dakota State. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force, from December 1942 until January 1946.
After the war, Winston owned and operated a hardware store in Arlington, South Dakota, for two years. On September 5, 1948, he married Mary Poppen in Brookings. He operated a tractor and implement business in Brookings for seven years, and then became the purchasing agent at South Dakota State for 31 years, retiring in 1986. In 1978, he and Mary spent two months in Botswana as the purchasing agent for the college being developed there.
Winston was a charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church. He was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club, National Association of Educational Buyers, Golden K, and he was involved with the Dakota District Boy Scouts and Volunteer Service Bank. He chaired the Brookings United Way drive. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, crafts, and volunteering.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Brookings; a son, Marc (Lisa) Wolpert, of Boulder City, Nevada; a daughter, DeeAnn Wolpert, of Brookings; six grandchildren: Matthew, Elizabeth (Neil) Podoll, Whitney, Ashley, Marc E. Wolpert, and Deidra Knaus; and a great-granddaughter, Kailie Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Hazel; a brother, Duane and his wife Cleo; and a nephew, Randy.
