Wilma Herold, age 80, of Brookings, died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Avera-Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 27, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Wilma Irene (Wilaby) Herold was born June 14, 1932, at White, South Dakota, to William and Helena (Kracke) Wilaby. She attended school at White, Bushnell, Elkton, and Brookings. On June 27, 1949, she married Melvin E. Herold at Elkton. After raising their family, Wilma was employed at 3M for several years. She worked as a daycare provider at home for 51 years. Wilma was a member of First Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, baking, playing cards, collecting bells, and especially spending time with her family and friends. She was named runner-up as Brookings Mother of the Year. Survivors include her husband, Melvin, of Brookings; seven children: William Herold of Brookings, Daniel (Debra) Herold of Sioux Falls, Douglas (Jane) Herold of Brookings, Cynthia (Marty) Christensen of Mitchell, Debra (Mike) Davis of Brookings, Jodie (Barry) Nielsen of Sioux Falls, and Lori (Allen) Jager of Brookings; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Nagel, of Brookings; and a brother-in-law, Bill Kuechenmeister, of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters: Helen Przybycien, Dorothy Culhane, and Mavis Kuechenmeister; and a twin brother, William.
