Obituary

William L. Riechers, age 59, of Volga, died Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Monday, June 6, 2011, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Sunday at First Lutheran Church and again an hour preceding services Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. William Leonard Riechers was born November 3, 1951, to Delmer and Jane (Seaman) Riechers. He was raised on the family farm near Orient, South Dakota and graduated from Faulkton High School in 1970. He earned his Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, in 1974. While attending Northern, he worked at Kesslers . On June 28, 1975, he married LaVonne Boots in Redfield, South Dakota. Bill worked as the executive director of the Friends of Oahe, and then as a salesman for Hubbard Milling. He moved to Volga in May 1979. He and his wife owned and operated the Dairy Maid/Feed Lot drive-in from 1980 to 1984. He served on the city council and as mayor for 14 years. He was instrumental in bringing many improvements to the city including building the golf course, swimming pool, and baseball diamond. He ran for the office of Commissioner of Schools and Public Lands and worked for other ag-related companies before helping develop South Dakota Soybean Processors plant in Volga. Through his company, Value Added Ventures, LLC., he helped raise money for ten ethanol plants, most recently in Wagner, South Dakota. Bill served as president of the First Lutheran Church congregation in Volga, and president of the Volga Lions Club and Volga Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Jaycees. He was an involved sports coach and spectator and a great fan of the Sioux Valley Cossacks, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Twins. Survivors include his wife, LaVonne Riechers, of Volga; son, Jason Riechers, of Brookings; a daughter, Amber Riechers, of Yankton; a sister, Dr. Mary Helen Harris, of Sioux Falls; a brother, Dr. George (Dr. Jan Beyers) Riechers of Marino Valley, California; an uncle, Robert (Marj) Seaman, of Portland, Oregon; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and special cousin, Bob Matter.
