Dr. William Burnell Kessler, 84, a retired dentist, passed away on Wednesday November 26, 2013, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am. Monday, December 2, 2013, at the United Church of Christ in Brookings. Dr. Kessler was born December 16, 1928 in Oklahoma City, OK to Walter and Louise (Killinger) Kessler. He was a graduate of Central High School in Oklahoma City and attended Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He graduated from Oklahoma City University. Inspired by his father's dental profession, he graduated from Loyala Medical University in Chicago, IL with a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery. He served in the US Navy, both active and reserve, as a dentist for 40 years and retired as a Commander. In 1957, he married his wife, Marjorie, and ultimately resided in Brookings, SD. He designed and custom built his own dental office on North Main to serve the Brookings community for over 36 years. He was a member of the Brookings United Church of Christ and Kiwanis Club and was an avid supporter of South Dakota State University and Scripps Hospital in San Diego, California. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Howard Kessler, daughter Sharon (Dan) Bacon of Louisville, KY; son Gary (Carole) Kessler of Daytona, FL; four grandchildren Alexa, Layne and Seth Bacon of Louisville, KY and Michael Absher of Reston, VA; a brother Dwight (Sharon) Kessler, a sister Francene Brumback, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Louise Kessler, son, William Kessler, Jr., and brother, John Kessler.
