Obituary

William E. Kamps, age 68, of Brookings, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. William Ernest Kamps was born December 20, 1935, in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, to Charles and Vera (Curbow) Kamps. He graduated from high school in Sedro-Woolley in 1954. He entered the U.S. Army on January 10, 1955, and served in the Army Security Agency until December 24, 1957. He enrolled at Western Washington State University in Bellingham, Washington, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business-Economics in 1964. On June 15, 1963, he married Jane Noble Fairbourn at Tacoma, Washington. In 1968, Bill received his Master of Arts degree in Economics from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, and in 1974 he received his Ph.D. in Economics from Washington State University. He taught Economics courses at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1968 and 1969. He was Professor of Economics at South Dakota State University from 1972 until 1998. Bill was a member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, reading, and spending time with his grandchildren. He delivered Meals On Wheels and assisted the elderly with tax preparation. Survivors include his three children: Deborah (Mark) Lanser, Matthew (Laura) Kamps, and Gregory Kamps, all of Brookings; five grandchildren: Angela and Staci Lanser, and James, Christian, and Cheyanne Kamps; two sisters: Mary Kamps and Betty (John) Covey, both of Las Vegas, Nevada; and a brother, Charles (Cali) Kamps of Indio, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Jane, in 1995.
