Obituary

Wayne W. Waltz, age 91, of Brookings, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Memorial services will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 20, 2011, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Wayne W. Waltz was born September 18, 1919, in Brookings, South Dakota, to P. Ward and Birdella (McKnight) Waltz. He was a life-long resident of Brookings, except for service in World War II for five years. He attended school in Brookings and at SDSU where he graduated with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. In February 1941, Wayne left Brookings as a First Sergeant with the National Guard. His entire World War II service was with the Army Engineers. He served overseas in India from 1944 through 1945, and returned to the States in February 1946 as a Major. While in India, Wayne met an Army nurse, Ruth Kosbau, whose home was Waukon, Iowa. They were married in Waukon in September of 1946. In 1947 Wayne joined R.A. Mart, a general contractor in the Brookings area. In 1958, upon Mr. Mart's retirement, Wayne formed Waltz Construction, which he ran until his retirement in 1998. Wayne was a member of Rotary, Elks, Masons, and El Riad Shrine, and he was a past president of the Associated General Contractors Building Chapter. Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Brookings, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rex and Gene.
