Wayne D. McKeown, age 89, of Brookings, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 5, 2004, at the Brookings Wesleyan Church, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Brookings Wesleyan Church. Wayne D. McKeown was born August 21, 1914, at Bushnell, South Dakota, to Earl C. and Ethel (Etting) McKeown. He attended country school and high school for two years in Bushnell and for one year in White. On August 28, 1940, he married Evelyn Ann Erickson, at Rock Rapids, Iowa. Following their marriage, Wayne was a painter and carpenter for five years. He farmed northeast of Brookings until 1980. He and Evelyn moved to Brookings in 1995. Evelyn died July 13, 2002. As a young man, Wayne played baseball and also enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing, and working with horses. He enjoyed travel, and had been to all the lower 48 states. He remained a sports fan all through his life. He served as treasurer of the Bushnell Wesleyan Church and was on the board of the Brookings Wesleyan Church for 35 years. He was on the Sherman Township school board for ten years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, AARP, and Golden K. Survivors include three children: Barry McKeown, of Arlington, Texas, Connie (Larry) Hobbie of Flandreau, South Dakota, and Patsy (Ray) Heyde, of Shady Shores, Texas; four grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and two sisters: Thallis Jensen of White, and Dolores Brannon of Oxnard, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and four brothers: Everett, Beverly, Gordon, and Verle.
