Obituary

Wallace Gene (Jiggs) Hickman, 82, was born on March 13, 1933, in Columbus, ND to Agnes and Claude Hickman. He passed away on August 21 at the United Living Community nursing home in Brookings, SD. Wally was active in all sports, choir and church activities while growing up with his eight brothers and sisters whom he treasured. He served in the US army for two years. He married the love of his life, Constance Sandberg, in 1957 and worked at various jobs in northwestern ND, while Connie raised their twin girls Lisa and Linda. They later moved to Fargo, ND, where Wally worked as parts manager for Volkswagon, and eventually at Fargo Tire where he managed the retread department. It was in Fargo where their third daughter, Angela was born. He was an active member of St. John Lutheran church, and could easily be found at the softball diamonds as he coached the "Fargo Tire Michelinettes" fast pitch softball team. He started a retread business in Sioux Falls, SD in 1978 and he again formed a softball team, "Wally's Wheels". He and Connie moved back to Fargo in 1992 to be closer to family, and in 2014 moved to Brookings, SD, to a retirement/assisted living facility. Wally was a gentle giant who never met a person he didn't like. He played football at Valley City State and Minot State and was a graduate of NDSU. He was an avid Bison fan, even recovering from a serious illness just in time to watch them win their 4th consecutive football championship. Wally was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His three girls who were each, at one time, a pitcher, a catcher, and a shortstop on his winning softball teams were his pride and joy. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Connie of Brookings SD, his three daughters, Lisa (Doug) Hicks of Jamestown, ND, Linda (Scott) Timperley of LeMars, Iowa, Angie (Scott) Hegdahl of Brookings, SD, two brothers Delano (Lucia) of Burnsville, MN, and Lowell (Laurie) of Bozeman, MT, a sister, Mary Hoffmeyer of Fargo, ND, brother-in-law Dennis (Pamela) Sandberg, six grandchildren, Justin, Aaron, Alissa, Emily, Dane and Devon, two step grandchildren Derek and Trevor, two great grandchildren Parker and Reece and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Agnes, his three brothers, Garth, Perry, and Jerome, two sisters, Pauline and Donna, and his in-laws, Edgar and Aurora Sandberg. Cremation has taken place and Eidsness Funeral Home of Brookings is in charge of arrangements. Services will be held on Friday August 28th at 1:00pm in the chapel of United Living Community nursing home which is located at 405 1st Ave in Brookings, SD. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to be made to the NDSU Athletic Fund in Wally's name.
