Virginia Ginny (Carter) Smith, age 84, died Saturday, October 2, 2010, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota, after a long battle with Parkinsons disease. Memorial services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. A memorial service will follow with her extended family in Jacksonville, Florida, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the United Retirement Center Foundation, 405 1st Ave., Brookings, SD 57006.
Ginny was born November 12, 1925, in Jacksonville, Florida, to John James Carter and Jennie (Barber) Carter. She lived all her life in Jacksonville, until 2004, when she and her husband Cecil relocated to Brookings, South Dakota, for health reasons
Her interests included family, friends, church, and reading. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members, including her mother who passed away in her ninties.
She is survived by her children: Holly (Adair) Watters of Spartenberg, South Carolina, William (Becky) Smith of Jacksonville, Florida, Joanie (Rick) Holm of Brookings, South Dakota, and Donna (Jeff) Ketchledge of Port Orange, Florida; ten grandchildren; a sister, Alma Dees; and brothers: jack and Alvin Carter. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jennie; her beloved husband of 60 years, Cecil; her sister, Mary; a brother, Ted; and granddaughter, Laurel.
