Virginia Schlimmer, age 85, of Volga, SD, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings, SD. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, at First Lutheran Church in Volga. Interment will follow at First Lutheran Cemetery in Volga. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at First Lutheran Church in Volga.

Virginia Ann Schlimmer was born August 17, 1941 at Brookings to Leonard and Genevieve (Olson) Tenning. She lived on the family homestead near Sinai until moving with her family to Volga at the age of six, when they purchased the farm where she spent most of her life until moving into Volga in 2007. She graduated from Volga High School and Northwest College of Commerce in Huron. She married Leland M. Schlimmer at First Lutheran Church, Volga, on February 24, 1960. They farmed near Rutland for two years and then returned to the farm at Volga where she grew up.

Virginia was a member of First Lutheran Church, active in WELCA, first female president of the church council and served on several church boards, was a Sunday Schools and VBS teacher for many years, served as church organist for 11 years and was a choir member for 40 years. She was chair of the church building committee for the 1995 church addition. She served as Lay Ministry Coordinator at First Lutheran for over five years and also volunteered as Caring Community Coordinator. She loved serving in her beloved congregation.

She was a partner with her husband in the farming, tax preparation and residential development businesses. She was a member of Century Club, First Place 4 Health, Lit Wits Book Club, Bread for the World and Sons of Norway and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Lutheran Social Services. She received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Sioux Valley School in 2015. She enjoyed a lifelong love of books and learning and prided herself in having the first “Little Library” in Volga. She loved trivia and jokes, music, her Norwegian heritage, and was an avid follower of current events. She loved her community and many activities and friendships, but faith and family came first.

She is survived by one daughter, Heidi (Dale) Henderschiedt, Brookings, two sons of Volga, Paul and Erik (Amy), one granddaughter, Ashley (Michael) Collins, Brookings, two grandsons, Jackson Schlimmer and Hudson Schlimmer, Volga, a great grandson, Kayden Collins, two nephews, William Carpenter, Sturgis and Charles Carpenter, Spring Hill, TN, and seven cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Patricia Carpenter.
