Obituary

Virginia Denton, age 67, of Brookings, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She died of complications following a fall at her apartment in Brookings. Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Virginia Rae (Mager) Denton was born June 15, 1944, at the home of her grandmother, Mary Mager, in Redfield, South Dakota, to Herbert and Bernice (Rose) Mager. She spent her early years growing up in the Norton Acres addition of Sioux Falls. She attended Bryant Grade School and Axtel Park Junior High. She later moved to Redfield, South Dakota. She married Bill Denton on June 3, 1972, and was widowed on March 29, 1980, when Bill was killed in a car accident. Virginia washed dishes at the Redfield Hospital and later at Leo's Café in Redfield, where she was employed for 20 years. Virginia enjoyed making ceramics and oil paintings. She painted many pictures of the Lord's Last Supper, Jesus at Gethsemane, and Elvis Presley, all on velvet. She gave these to family members. She absolutely loved horses and all other animals. Over the years she had many Pomeranian dogs. She also loved old country music artistsher favorites being Loretta Lynn, Bill Anderson, and Hank Williams. She also loved Elvis Presley and spent many hours assembling 20 scrapbooks of his life. Although she didn't have any children of her own, she adored her nieces and nephews. To have known Virginia Denton was to know a person who was always cheerful and positive everyday. Sne was always trying to make the most of her situation, and was always thinking of others. Virginia is survived by three sisters: Loretta Volkers of Redfield, South Dakota, Vivian (Bob) Pope of Crittenden, Kentucky, and Yvonne (Donn) Fetzer, of Brookings, South Dakota; four brothers: Herbert (Jay) Mager, Jr. of Las Vegas, Nevada, Lester (Sharon) Mager of Ramsey, Minnesota, Walt (Gina) Mager of Cerritos, California, and Kenny (Cheryl) Mager of Buffalo, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Joan Mager, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eight nieces; and five nephews. She was preceded by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Ronald Mager.
