Viola L. Noess, age 92, of Mitchell, formerly of Brookings, died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Sinai Lutheran Church, with interment in the West Sinai Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no visitations. Viola Lorraine (Peterson) Noess was born August 23, 1919, to Marvin and Emma (Knutson) Peterson at the Volga Hospital. She was raised in Sinai, where her dad was a barber and owned a grocery store. Viola graduated from Sinai High School in 1938 and after graduation worked for her dad in the grocery store and also as a telephone operator in Sinai. On February 18, 1945, she married Selmer M. Noess in Sinai. The couple bought a farm one and a half miles south of Sinai and farmed. In August 1969 they moved to Brookings, and Viola worked at the Staurolite Inn as the supervisor of housekeeping until 1983. Selmer died in 1983. Viola became the housekeeping supervisor at Brookview Manor, where she worked until 1989. After retirement she also worked part-time at the Hallmark Store in Brookings. She moved to Mitchell in March of 2007 to be close to her son and family. She lived at Rosewood Court until December 2008 when she became a resident of Firesteel Healthcare Center. Viola was very active in Sinai Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid, serving as secretary and president. She was active in First Lutheran Church and Circle while living in Brookings. She was a member of the Friendship Garden Club and was involved in the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include her son, Loren and wife Nancy, of Mitchell; grandsons: Steven (Veronica) of Atlanta, Georgia, Dexter (Lauren) of Woodbury, Minnesota, David of Richfield, Minnesota, and Paul of Sioux Falls; a sister, Margaret Sneve, of White; two nephews; and a niece. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Selmer; a brother Leonard and sister-in-law Mildred Peterson; a brother-in-law, Stanton Sneve; three nieces; a nephew; and an infant daughter, Janice.
