Obituary

Verna Jonker, age 86, died Saturday, March 7, 2015, at home in Brookings. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 12, 2015, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Burial will be at Estelline in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitations will be 5-7p.m., Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Verna Grace Rhody was born June 7, 1928, at Selfridge, ND, to Clarence and Sylvia (Gravning) Rhody. On September 27, 1947, Verna married Raymond George Jonker at Brookings, SD. They made their home in Estelline until 1957. At that time, Verna and Ray moved to Lead, SD. After seven years of working in the Homestake Gold Mine, the Jonkers moved back to the Estelline area to begin farming. In October of 1971, Verna and Ray purchased a farm northeast of Estelline. Ray died in 1985, and Verna later moved to Brookings, where she resided until the time of her death. Bingo, bowling, crossword puzzles, and reading were some of Verna's favorite activities. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Red Hat Society, and the First Lutheran quilting ladies. Survivors include her sons; Dennis (Lois) Jonker of Baltic, SD, and Michael (Debra) Jonker of Breckenridge, MN; daughters-in-law, Judy Jonker and Mary Jonker; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Laabs of Brookings and Ida Mae DeVine of New Mexico; and brother, Quentin Rhody of Clear Lake, SD. Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; children, Allen, Gerald, and Gary Jonker; and nine siblings.
