Obituary

Vern S. Johnson, age 84, of Brookings, died Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at the V.A. Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 12, 2006, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, South Dakota, with visitations preceding the services beginning at 1:00 P.M. Interment will be at 1:00 P.M. (Mountain Standard Time), Monday, February 13, 2006, in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota, where he will be laid to rest with his wife, Arline. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be directed to the Salvation Army. Vernon Stanley Johnson was born February 7, 1922, in Brookings, to John J. and Sophie E. (Lykke) Johnson. He grew up in Brookings County and worked as a general farm hand. Vern enlisted in the Army Infantry in November, 1943. During World War II he drove light truck in the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and other parts of Central Europe. He was honorably discharged January 16,1946. On August 7, 1950, Vern was united in marriage to Arline M. Hanson in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While in Minneapolis Vern was certified to drive street cars and buses in the Twin Cities. After several years the family moved to the Brookings area. They owned and operated the Lake Campbell Roller Rink for 21 years. During that time Vern always did the fireworks on the 4th of July for the community to enjoy. He took great pride in ownership of the parks roller rink. His favorite hobby was playing the guitar and singing, especially Hank Williams songs. Vern and Arline then moved to Custer, South Dakota, where they owned and managed a motel for 3 years and Arline also managed a gift shop for 2 years. Vern served as Moody County Constable for several years. They went south every winter while Arline was alive. Arline passed away on February 27, 1994, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, and was buried in the Black Hills National Cemetery. Vern later lived in Watertown, South Dakota, for a short time before moving to the Bethany Lutheran Home, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, following a stroke. Survivors include a son, Eugene (Manuela), of Cedar Park, TX; a daughter, Rita Orlando (Jim) of Hugo, MN; 3 brothers: Alden (Lillian), Warren (Dorothy), and Burdell Johnson; 6 grandchildren: Stacy West, Russell Lee (Heidi) Bullis, Charlene (Bahram) Sheikh, Sheila Johnsrud, Wayne Johnson, and Debra (Greg) Rustad; 11 great-grandchildren: Erica (Jesse) Weeks, Derrick West, Jillian (Albert) Nelson, William Brown Jr., Aaron Johnson, Anthony Sjodahl, Jacqueline (Jared) Osburn, Lynsey Sjodahl, Allen Wickerham, Steffany Chaney, and Cory Maxey; and 3 great-great-grandchildren: Tryston, Tiffani, and Tyler Osburn. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son Fred, one sister, Vivian; and his five brothers, John, Richard, Duane, Eugene, and Roger.
