Obituary

Ted Gillum, age 80, of Brookings, died Saturday, October 21, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 27, 2006, at the Brookings Wesleyan Church. Interment will be at a later date at the Milbank Cemetery. Harold Edward Ted Gillum was born August 1, 1926, at Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Walter Edward and Helen E. (Frank) Gillum. Ted graduated from high school in Monango, North Dakota. He was in the U.S. Army from September 1944 until December 1946, serving in the liberation of the Philippines and the occupation of Japan. Following his discharge from the service, he attended college in Illinois and at Northern State in Aberdeen. He lived and worked in various places in the United States, moving to Brookings in 1978. He was the weed agent in Brookings County for ten years. He retired in 2000. On July 20, 1985, he married Marjean (Olthoff) Painter in Brookings. Ted was a life member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Brookings Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and playing cribbage. Survivors include his wife, Marjean Gillum, of Brookings; a son, Ron Gillum, of Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters: Nancy Schuler of Omaha, Nebraska, and Laurie Davis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two step-children: Greg Painter of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Jeri Price of Sacramento, California; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, and a granddaughter.
