Svend Knudsen, age 89, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, formerly of Brookings, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at Huron Woods in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 17,2004 at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, South Dakota. Interment will be in Pioneer Lutheran Cemetery, rural White, South Dakota. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Svend Knudsen was born March 11, 1915 in Ingstrup, Denmark to Einar and Marie (Nelson) Knudsen. He arrived in America with his mother at the age of five. He attended grade school at Sterling District No. 43 and graduated from Brookings High School in 1933. Svend went to Detroit, Michigan, when he was a young man. He worked in Henry Fords motor plant until he was called into the Army. He was overseas in France and Germany. When he returned from military service, Svend worked for Dow Chemical until his retirement. On December 21, 1940, he married Mary Kurlowech in Detroit. Svend was stricken with Alzheimer's disease a few years ago and was in the Alzheimers unit at Huron Woods at Ann Arbor, Michigan, for several years. He was a member of a Danish club in Detroit, which he enjoyed very much, but it disbanded after most of the members died. He enjoyed stained glass projects, gardening, and playing cards. Svend is survived by his wife, Mary, of over sixty years, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; a brother, Walter (Irene) Knudsen of Long Prairie, Minnesota; a sister, Betty Thompson, of Brookings; a sister-in-law, Katie (Chet) Alexander, of Farmington, Michigan; nephews: Jerry (Linda) Thompson of Fridley, Minnesota, Dave (Rose) Thompson and Don Thompson both of Brookings, Alan (Linda) Knudsen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Kevin (Jackie) Knudsen of Pennsylvania; an aunt, Marie Nelson, of Brookings, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Manfred Thompson.
