Obituary

Stanton Josiah Kirby was born to Charles (Hans) Kirby and Golda Belle Tharp in Aurora, South Dakota, on July 20, 1940 and passed away at his home on May 3, 2007. His children Marcella Osterkamp and Cory Kirby, along with his wife, Judy, were at his bedside. Stanton joined a family of three older brothers, Ernest, Bernard, and Alan and two older sisters Leolyn, and Marilyn. He was later joined by a younger sister, Maureen. Stanton remembered with joy hearing his mother comment, You are the littlest boy Ive got. Stanton attended Sunday school and later church at Aurora Methodist Church in Aurora. Stanton married Judy Kaye Smith on April 27, 1958. Stanton enjoyed watching and helping his children and grandchildren be the wonderful people they have become. He was so proud of them and they were the joy and light of his life. He loved collecting glass dogs, gardening, playing cards, and all of nature. Stanton is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter, Marcella Osterkamp; a son, Cory (September) Kirby; grandchildren: Jacob and Josiah Osterkamp, and Nathan and Calista Kirby; a brother, Alan Ray Kirby; three sisters: Leolyn (Dean) Miller, Marilyn Kirby, and Maureen (Fred) Miller; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Kirby. Stanton also leaves numerous friends Memorial services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings at 3 pm on Wednesday, May 9, with interment to follow at the Fairmont Cemetery, Aurora, South Dakota. Casual dress is preferred. Lunch and fellowship will follow at the Methodist church in Brookings. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Brookings Health System, Hospice Agency.
