Obituary

Sophie O. Smith, age 91, of Volga, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Arlington, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will precede services at the church. Sophie Otelia (Thompson) Smith was born September 27, 1914, to Peter and Anna (Stakkaland) Gunderson Thompson on a rural Volga farm. She was baptized November 1, 1914, at the old Volga First Lutheran Church by Rev. Voldal. She attended country school near Volga. She was confirmed May 19, 1929, at First Lutheran Church. She graduated from Volga High School in 1932. She did babysitting and housekeeping for different families. She attended the old Volga First Lutheran Church until it burned in 1930. She attended the present First Lutheran Church in Volga. Sophie was active in Ladies Aid, and the community chorus. She was a member of the Lutheran Daughters of the Revolution and served as a Sunday School teachers aid. On April 6, 1950, Sophie married Harold Smith in Pipestone, Minnesota. Their daughter, Cheryl, lived with them until Harolds death in 1987. Sophies ill health forced her into the Arlington Care Center, and Cheryl moved in Dakota Sun Assisted Living in 1996. Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Smith, of Volga; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five half-sisters, and three half-brothers.
