Obituary

S.L. "Buz" Busdicker, age 84, of Volga, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, September 17, 2015. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment in Union Cemetery at Flandreau at 2:00 p.m. Visitations will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church. Southard Lee "Buz" Busdicker was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 22, 1931 to Donald and Delores Berman. He was raised in Toledo and lived primarily in the Ann Arbor MI area, Sioux Falls, SD and Volga SD. After graduating from Waite High School in 1949, he joined the Air Force, where he played in the Offutt Air Force band for three years. It was while he was playing with the band that he met his wife, Bonnie Lee. They were married in Flandreau, SD in 1953. He completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music at the University of Michigan, where he played clarinet and saxophone and was a proud member of the University of Michigan Marching Band, under the direction of William Revelli. After having a severe stroke at age 34, Buz supported his wife and five daughters by keeping the house in order. Meals were always on the table at six, laundry done and sorted twice a week, and the yard work done. And he still found time to go to the Elks every Thursday night. It was only because of what he did for the family that the girls and Bonnie were able to achieve all their accomplishments. Buz re-learned to play his instruments with the help of family and friends such as Corliss Johnson, MK Hugghins and Ani Berberian. He loved playing at church and for special occasions, including on a pontoon along the shores of Oakwood Lake. He also spent many hours with his friends fishing and playing cribbage, where his sense of humor and off-hand comments (Buz-isms) always kept things lively. Buz leaves his wife of 62 years, Bonnie; daughters Sheryl (Jim) Nieman and children Ashley Seurer and Jason Cady, Gail (Jerry) Wild and children Lindsey and Morgan Lothrop, Gwen Lee (Rob Taylor) and children Ryan and Seth Brandhagen, Lois (Brian) Crabtree and children Ross and Vince Crabtree and Catie Lavendar, and Laura (Jeff) Vostad and children Zachary Britton and Grace Vostad. He also was blessed with 7 great-grandchildren and many loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores May; father, Donald Berman; step-father, Paul Busdicker; brother, Fritz Busdicker; and son-in-law Roger Britton.
