Obituary

Sigurd D. Johnson 74, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013, at the United Living Center in Brookings, South Dakota. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on July 6 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Revillo, South Dakota. Sigurd was born in Watertown, South Dakota, on December 8, 1938 to George and Judith (Strom) Johnson, and raised as the youngest of seven in Revillo, South Dakota. When Sig was a senior at Revillo High School, he met the love of his life, Sharon Dornbusch, at the roller skating rink in Milbank. They were united in marriage on October 8, 1960, and were still holding hands through his final days. Sig and Sharon raised their four daughters and farmed in the Revillo area until moving to Brookings in 1987. Sig was an owner / operator for northAmerican Van Lines for twenty-six years and drove throughout the forty-eight contiguous states and parts of Canada. Whether the reader, the listener, or the teller, Sig loved a good story. Telling of his own adventures from "the road" provided a glimpse of the lives of others throughout the United States. When not on the road, Sig's greatest enjoyment came from simple pleasures at home with his wife, children, and later his grandchildren. His love of nature showed in the trees, crops, and animals that flourished under his care. Sig also loved spending time at area lakes. Sig dreamt of sailboats, read about sailing, and practiced the craft as long as he was able. Acts of kindness toward family, friends, and strangers were woven throughout his days. Sig is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Sharon; four daughters, Holly (William) May of Colorado, Heather Johnson of Texas, Kimberly (Russ) Fisher of Minnesota, and April (Troy) Meyerink of Sioux Falls, SD; ten grandchildren; brother Steve (Darlene) Johnson and sister, Olivia "Veva" Johnson. He was preceded in death by one sister (Marion Toft) and three brothers (James, Walter, and George), and his parents. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Research or to the donor's choice. Eidsness Funeral Home of Brookings is handling Sigurd's funeral arrangements.
