Obituary

Shirley J. Mittan, age 73, of Brookings, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 25, 2013, at Morningside Community Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Shirley Jean (Goossen) Mittan was born December 4, 1939, at Marion, South Dakota, to Jacob J. and Ethel Rose (Deckert) Goossen. She attended country school and graduated from Marion High School. She attended Sioux Falls College before receiving her bachelor's degree and master's degree in food economics from South Dakota State University. On May 7, 1965, she married Raymond S. Mittan at the First Church of God in Marion. The couple lived in Germany and the Black Hills before returning to Brookings. Shirley was a chemist for the South Dakota State University Water Quality Laboratory for over 41 years; she was honored as the Career Service Employee of the Month in 2011. She also owned and operated Star Specialties, an advertising and promotional products company, for many years. Shirley was a member of Morningside Community Church where she was the first and only woman to chair the church corporation. She also served as chairwoman of the church council. Survivors include her husband, Ray Mittan, of Brookings; three children: Tom (Abigail) Mittan of Brookings, Dan (Danelle) Mittan of Brookings, and Susan (Marcus) Johansen of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; six grandchildren: Thomas Mittan, Sarah Mittan, Isaac Mittan, Bethany Johansen, Elena Johansen, and Elysia Mittan; three brothers: Kenneth (Linda) Goossen of Carrollton, Texas, Robert (Bonnie) Goossen of Renner, South Dakota, and Jim (Mona) Goossen of Andersen, Indiana; and a sister, Elaine Goossen, of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents.
