Shirley Inez Harvey was born February 15, 1925, to Charles and Sarah (Schmidt) Short at home in Parnell Township, Brookings County, SD. She was raised on a farm between Elkton and Aurora. Shirley attended Trenton #83 through the 5th grade; Parnell #6 from 6th to 8th grade; and graduated from Aurora High School in 1944. After graduation, she went to work for FW Woolworth in Brookings.

On June 25, 1946, Shirley married Leonard Harvey. They farmed together and raised four children. After Leonard passed away on June 18, 1964, Shirley moved her family to Brookings and opened an in-home daycare. She lovingly cared for children for the next 36 years. After retirement, Shirley worked at the United Living Center for six years. Shirley was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Aurora.   She faithfully served with the church quilters, UMW, and numerous church boards and committees. Shirley was still a very active member at 90 years old.

Shirley enjoyed the Dumor Hobby Club; quilting; working on puzzles and word finds; taking care of her plants and flowers; and spending as much time as possible with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters, Doris Hornby and Donna (Alan) Riedesel all of Brookings; sister-in-law, Isabelle Short of Brookings; brother-in-law, Ed Lorenz of Brookings; sister-in-law, Hazel Case of Florida; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; two sons, Dale and Dennis; sister, Hazel Swenning; brother, Don Short; and son-in-law, Jim Hornby.
