Shirley Viola Clark was born April 30, 1923, in Miner County, South Dakota to Harold and Gladys (Nelson) Dotzauer. She grew up there and graduated from Howard High School in 1941. After graduation, Shirley moved to Long Beach, California, to live with relatives and work at Sears. She returned to South Dakota and was employed in Sioux Falls. Shirley was united in marriage to John Ambrose at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Pipestone, Minnesota, on July 21, 1947. The couple resided in Howard where John operated the family owned Wheeler Hotel. In 1955, they moved back to Watertown, South Dakota, where Shirley worked at the Lincoln Hotel as a bookkeeper. She was then employed at Bartron Clinic as an administrative assistant for 20 years until her retirement. She moved to Brookings in 1997 and later to Volga in 2002. Shirley was a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Brookings. She was active in the Codington County Republican Women, Wednesday Episcopal prayer group in Brookings, and Trinity Episcopal Church in Watertown, serving as a choral member and director of acolytes. She enjoyed flowers, growing tomatoes, camping, and was an avid Jackrabbit and Twins fan. Shirley had a strong love of music, but her family was her number one love. Survivors include three daughters: Jonette (Robert) Miller of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Barbara (Richard) Newman of Pierre, South Dakota, and Kathy (Bill) Heylens of Volga, South Dakota; two sisters: Marjorie Hopper and Janice (Gary) Bowar of Winner, South Dakota; a sister-in-law, Mavis Dotzauer of Washington; six grandchildren: Kristen (Brian) DeVries, Nicholle Miller, Jocelyn Newman, Brendan Newman, Tara Krog, and Dustin Heylens; and two great-grandchildren: Brooklyn and Baylor DeVries. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Cyril Dotzauer.
