Shirley Ann McCuen was born in White, South Dakota, to Henrietta and Roy McCuen on September 23, 1935. She attended country schools near White, Lake Campbell and Elkton and graduated from Brookings High School in 1953. Shirley worked as a bookkeeper for Firestone Hardware and Walters Direct Services for two years after high school and in 1955 went to work for Dr. Peeke in Volga, South Dakota. In 1957 she married Arnie Adams and the two farmed north of Brookings until 1985. In 1985 she went to work for Yorkshire Eye Clinic in Brookings and retired in 2001. In 2009 they moved into Brookings where she enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

By nature, Shirley was the ultimate care taker. No matter who you were, a little mercurochrome and a band-aid, a hug and a kiss, she was always there to soothe the ill. Her unwavering commitment and caring of Arnie during the last four years of his life was her ultimate calling and she is now handing out band-aids and providing hugs and kisses to those in heaven.

Her hobbies included roller skating, dancing, club with the neighborhood ladies, bowling, gardening, golfing and her grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three children; Brad and Beth Adams, Hot Springs, Terry and Michelle Adams, Sioux Falls and Lori and Dana Dunmire, Rapid City. Grandchildren; Colin and Jill Adams, Jesse Adams and Alli Novak, Zach and Shelby Adams, Lauren and Casey Rhoda, Myranda Dunmire and Reid Erdmann and Baylee Dunmire and Jacob Synnott. Her great grand-children; Elliot Adams, Grayson Adams, Aubrey Adams and Graham Rhoda. And many nieces and nephews she cherished.

Shirley is preceded in death by Arnie, her parents and her siblings Donald McCuen, Bethyl Lamp and Dorothy Even and their spouses.

The Adams family would like to thank you for your love and support today and in the days to come.
