Obituary

Sherwood O. Berg, age 94, died Sunday, February 16, 2014, at the United Living Community in Brookings. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow at the Performing Arts Center. Visitations will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, at the McCrory Gardens Visitor and Education Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the SDSU Foundation, Running Strong for American Indian Youth, Special Olympics, or charity of the donor's choice. Sherwood O. Berg was born May 17, 1919, at Hendrum, Minnesota, to Joseph O. and Ida T. Berg. He graduated from Hendrum High School and attended the University of Minnesota's School of Agriculture. He enrolled at South Dakota State College where he participated in R.O.T.C.; he received his B.S. degree with a major in agricultural economics in 1947. He earned his M.S. degree at Cornell University in 1948 and his Ph.D. in agricultural economics from the University of Minnesota in 1951. Collateral fields of study were land economics, statistics, mathematics, political science, and history. Woody enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, served in the Battle of the Bulge, and was involved in the funeral service for General George Patton. From June 1945 to August 1946 he was food and agricultural officer, rank of captain, at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. Upon his return to South Dakota State, he became a member of the 44 Kingsan organization of World War II veterans. He served as agricultural attaché from 1951 to 1954 in Yugoslavia and from 1954 to June 1957 in Denmark and Norway. From 1957 to 1963, he served as professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Minnesota. In 1963 he was appointed dean of the Institute of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota and served in this position until 1973. During this period he also served as chariman of President Lyndon B. Johnson's National Advisory Commission of Food and Fiber (1965-1967) and as a member of the President's Commission on Income and Maintenance Programs (1968-1970). From 1973 to 1975 he served as resident director, Indonesia, on a higher agricultural education project of Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities. In this capacity he worked to develop a graduate program in the Institute of Agriculture at Bogor. In 1975, Dr. Berg was appointed president of South Dakota State University, where he served until 1984. He instituted programs in resident instruction, research, extension, and international programs. Dr. Berg served as a consultant to the Ford Foundation, U.S. Agency for International Development, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He served as a director or trustee of numerous philanthropic organizations, financial institutions, educational foundations, and commercial enterprises. He was a member and served as an officer in a number of professional and scientific societies including the American Agricultural Economics Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Association of Agricultural Economists, Society for International Development, and the South Dakota Academy of Science. While in Washington, D.C., he was a member of the Cosmos Club. Locally, he was a member of the Brookings Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and First Presbyterian Church. In 2011 Agricultural Hall at SDSU was renamed Berg Agricultural Hall in recognition of the many contributions of Sherwood O. and Elizabeth H. Berg to the state and university. On August 12, 1944, Woody married Elizabeth Hall Berg, who survives him. They were married nearly 70 years. He is also survived by two children: Mary Elizabeth of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Bradley Joseph (Nina) of Singapore; two grandchildren: Joseph of Minneapolis and Monica of Singapore; a brother, Spencer (Phyllis) Berg of Chevy Chase, Maryland; and twelve nieces and nephews.
