Obituary

Ruth M. Waltz, age 99, of Brookings, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at the Brookings Hospital. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, preceded by interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials will be directed to the Brookings Public Library. Ruth M. (Kosbau) Waltz was born July 5, 1914, at Waukon, Iowa, to Charles and Alma (Johnson) Kosbau. She attended public schools, graduating in 1931. She attended Waukon Junior College for two years, and graduated as a registered nurse from the SUI School of Nursing at the University of Iowa in 1936. She was employed at the University Hospital until she enlisted in the Army Nurses Corps in 1942. Following further training she was stationed at the Base General Hospital in Calcutta, India, in 1944, serving there until 1945 before receiving her discharge with the rank of Captain. While serving in India, Ruth met Major Wayne Waltz from Brookings who was also stationed in Calcutta, India. They were married in Waukon, Iowa, on September 18, 1946, and enjoyed 64 years of marriage, residing in Brookings, South Dakota. Ruth was an avid reader and enjoyed her bridge clubs, spending time at Lake Poinsett, traveling, and wintering in California and Arizona. She enjoyed her many lifelong friends as well as her new friends at Summerhill Condominiums and most recently at Stoneybrook Assisted Living. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. Ruth's life was enriched and she cherished her relationship with nephew Dave (Diane) Kosbau of Brookings and their daughters Jill Kosbau, Jen (Ryan) Bauer and their sons Kyle, Will, and Jase. She is also survived by a brother, Ralph Kosbau, of Marshalltown, Iowa; sister, Jeanette (Norman) Fintel of Roanoke, Virginia; and nieces and nephews: Susan (Don) Mariano of White Plain , New York, Jo (Steve) Corson of Waverly, Iowa, Jean (Tim) Kuethe of Waverly, Iowa, Kathy (Steve) Womacks of Aurora, Colorado, Robert (Jenny) Kosbau of Marshalltown, Iowa, Peggy (Doug) Horn of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. William (Connie) Fintel of Pulaski, Virginia, and Barb (Greg) Collins of Greenville, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Howard and wife Gail, brother Paul and wife Elaine, sister Charlotte, sister-in-law Etta, and her husband, Wayne, on May 17, 2011.
