Obituary

Ruth R. (Kaun) Emerick , age 86, of Brookings, died Saturday, October 2, 2010, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 8, 2010, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home.

Ruth Rosella (Kaun) Emerick was born October 24, 1923, on a farm near Ireton, Wisconsin, to Albert and Hulda (Hartje) Kaun. She shared her early years with her parents and a brother on a small dairy farm near Hillpoint, Wisconsin.

Ruth met her husband, Royce, while working at Madison, Wisconsin, and they were married at Reedsburg, Wisconsin, September 2, 1953. They had three children, Richard, Linda, and Laurie. Ruth earned a Bachelor of Education degree at LaCrosse State University and a Master of Education degree at South Dakota State University. She taught elementary classes at Reedsburg, LaCrosse, and Madison, Wisconsin.

In 1957 Ruth and her family moved to Brookings, where Royce was a faculty member at SDSU. Ruth was owner/manager of the Brookings Teeter Totter childrens clothing store from 1971 until 1988.

Ruth was a charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church, initial co-editor of the church newspaper, and an active Church Circle member. She was an active 52 year Extension Club member, a member of Phi Kappa Phi, and while in business served on the Brookings Chamber of Commerce retail committee and as President of the Brookings Mall Association. Employment in Brookings included
several years at the South Dakota Art Museum and the SDSU Briggs Library where she worked until retirement.

Ruth enjoyed photography, gardening, and writing. She and her husband maintained homes in Brookings and on rural property south of Brookings.

Survivors include her husband, Royce, of Brookings; two daughters: Linda (Joseph) Moser of Milroy, Minnesota, and Laurie (Mike) Bushlack of Shakopee, Minnesota; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Hulda; a brother, Lorin Kaun; and her son, Richard.
