Ruth Marie Huckabay, 93, died Thursday, April 21, 2011, at her residence at United Retirement Center in Brookings, SD. Marie was born October 17, 1917, to William David Wesley Hampton and Letha Ann (Dortch) Hampton in Arkansas where she also received her schooling. On April 4, 1934, she married Vernon Evan Huckabay. Marie and Vernon moved from Arkansas to Fresno, California in 1936 where they lived until 1963 when they moved to Antioch, California. As Vernon's health began failing they moved back to Fresno in 1993. Vernon passed away in 1994. In May, 2004, Marie moved to Brookings where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law until she moved into United Retirement Center in August, 2010. Marie is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Gene) Murra of Brookings, SD and Jerry (Paula) Huckabay of Fresno, California, her sister Willodene Terry, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Olla Echert and Berneice Busby. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two infant daughters, Joan and Caroline Huckabay, two sisters, Nora Purcell and Irene Philips, one brother, Enos Hampton all of Arkansas and her grandson Scott Brug, Brookings.
