Obituary

Russell H. Bailey, age 77, of Brookings, died Sunday, January 27, 2008, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, January 31, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, with interment of cremated remains and military rites at 1:00 P.M. at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, the Alzheimers Foundation of America, or the Alzheimers Association. Russell Henry Bailey was born November 18, 1930, at Beverly, Massachusetts, to Russell Henry and Ada Mary (MacKinnon) Bailey. He attended grade and high school in Beverly, received a B.A. degree from the University of Michigan, and a M.S. degree from the University of California. On May 7, 1955, he married Marjorie Willner at Elmira, New York. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, Russ traveled with his family throughout the United States. He was stationed in Germany for three years and Japan for three years. He retired as a major on November 1, 1973. He served with South Dakota Public Broadcasting for 20 years, where he was instrumental in the organization of the Friends of Public Broadcasting. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, served as an elder and deacon, was active in the Mens Brotherhood, and taught Sunday School. He served as a chairman of the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, president of the Volunteer Service Bank, president of the Brookings Kiwanis Club, organizer for the Brookings Centennial parade, president of the United Retirement Center Board, president of the Brookings Area Mental Health Association, and clerk of Sterling Township. In 1998, he received the Gip Nolan Community Service Award from the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and travel. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Bailey, of Brookings; three children: James E. (Yvonne) Bailey of Sioux Falls, Laurel Wiggs of Watertown, South Dakota, and Mark Bailey of Salem, Oregon; six grandchildren; two sisters: Primilla (David) Young of Stafford, Virginia, and Ada Wear of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers: Tom Bailey of Orlando, Florida, and Donald (Louise) Bailey of Denver, Colorado; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Harriet, Priscilla, Patricia, and Jean Marie; and a brother, Richmond.
