Obituary

Roy Edward Van Maanen , 72, of Volga, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Volga.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at
First Lutheran Church in Volga. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery,
with military graveside rites by the Burrows-Young American Legion Post No.
114. Visitations will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Eidsness
Funeral Chapel in Volga. The family requests memorials be directed to the
First Lutheran Church organ fund, designated for the chime fund.

Roy was born June 19, 1930, to Ed and Evelyn (VandenBerg) Van Maanen on the family
farm north of Volga. He grew up in the Volga/Bruce area and graduated from
Bruce High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 6, 1951 , until
November 1954, during the Korean War. On April, 3, 1955 he married Doris
Umberger in Bruce.

Roy worked at a nursery in Colton until 1956. From there he held various
jobs until the early 1980's when he became the manager of the Sioux Valley
bus garage. Most recently he had taken on a position as custodian of the
Volga Christian School.

Roy remained active in his retirement by being a substitute bus driver,
creating many beautiful wood crafts, and remaining an avid sports fan. He
was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Volga. Roy was a member of
Burrows-Young American Legion Post 114 and a volunteer fireman for 20 years.

Survivors include his wife Doris F. Van Maanen, of Volga; one son Steve and
wife Pam of Redfield and their daughters Niki and Chad and great grandson
Tayen; Beth and fianc Chris Artz all of Sioux Falls; one daughter Dawn and
husband Carl Vitters and their daughter, Megan of Madison, NH; a brother Ken
(Jane Ann) of Brookings; a sister Sylvia (Gene Heuer) of Phoenix; a
sister-in-law Lois of Davenport; cousins,nieces, nephews, and all of the bus
children that affectionately called him Uncle or Grandpa Roy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and his brother
