Rolland Henry Lane was born February 23, 1908, at Brookings, South Dakota, to James W. and Carrie (Dowding) Lane. He died Saturday, February 8, 2003, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota. Rolland spent his early years on his familys farm north of Brookings, where he graduated from high school. On July 2, 1931, he married Cecil Mennis at Toronto, South Dakota. They farmed in the Brookings area until 1941 when they purchased a farm near Toronto. While there, Rolland served on the jury board and the school board. In 1949 Rolland took a job as district sales manager for the Pioneer Hi-Bred Corn Company. In 1966 he was appointed regional sales manager of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, a position he held until retiring in 1972. Upon retirement, the Lanes moved to Lake Poinsett where Rolland served on the board and as president of the Lake Poinsett Area Development Association. He also served on the Norden Township Board. In the fall of 1982 they moved to Arlington, South Dakota, and in 1990 moved to Brookings. Rolland was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, and music. Survivors include his wife, Cecil, of the White Healthcare Center in White; a son, Brian (LaVon) Lane, of Brookings, South Dakota; a daughter, Barbara (Verne) Carlson, of Willmar, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Morris, of Watertown, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and a sister.
