Roland D. May, 95, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at the Brookings Hospital, in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Sunday, January 11, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 3-6 P.M. Saturday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Roland D. May was born December 12, 1908, in Alpena, South Dakota, to Sam and Jessie (Decker) May. He graduated from Lane High School and attended Eastern State Normal School (Dakota State University) for two years. He taught school and coached for Thorp, Hosmer, and Bonilla. On October 19, 1934, Roland married Esther Loebs at Hosmer, South Dakota. He worked for the International Harvester Company in Watertown from 1941 until 1948 when the family moved to Brookings. He worked for the Hart Brothers and bought the Caf on Medary in 1955. In 1965 he bought the Zesto Drive Inn and operated it until 1976 when he retired. Roland was in Scouting 25 years and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Elks, and Rotary International. He participated in many sports, and was active in the Genealogical Society. Survivors include his wife, Esther May, of Brookings; four children: Rose Marie (Dave) Davison of Duluth, MN, Charles (Deanna) May of Long Lake, WI, Carol (Gary) Johnson of Ft. Pierre, SD, and Jim May of Phoenix, AZ; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gertrude Roler and Harriette Pickerel, and a brother, Harold May.
