Obituary

Roger Stanley Hobbie, 89, of Flandreau, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on the family farm, surrounded by his children, on September 1, 2025.

Roger was born on September 24, 1935, in Flandreau, to Oscar and Matilde Hobbie. He grew up working on the family farm and attended Smythe Country School before graduating from Egan High School in 1955, where he enjoyed playing both football and basketball. After graduation, Roger purchased a herd of milk cows before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he faithfully served his country.

On May 1, 1964, Roger was united in marriage to Ellen Kay (Mills) of Rapid City, South Dakota. Together they shared 56 years of marriage filled with love, faith, and family until Kay's passing in December 2020.

Farming was not only Roger's livelihood but also his commitment and way of life. For over 30 years he was a dedicated dairy farmer, faithfully caring for his herd. Over the years, he also raised a variety of crops and cared for an array of animals—hogs, horses, chickens, cattle, peacocks, turkeys, guineas, goats, sheep, cats, and dogs. A natural problem solver and a master fixer, Roger could repair, build, or improve just about anything placed in front of him. After retiring from full-time farming, he continued to keep busy, working for Midwest Golf Cars in Sioux Falls and Von Eye Farms in Coleman. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, traveling to Alaska, and could always be counted on to enjoy a dish of ice cream.

Faith was at the center of Roger's life. He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 11 and lived out his faith with quiet strength and humility. For 62 years, he faithfully attended and served at the Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Known by many as a "gentle giant," Roger will be remembered for his integrity, tender heart, steady prayers, tireless work ethic, resourceful mind, and unwavering devotion to his family and to Jesus Christ.

Roger is survived by his four children: Cheryl (Gary) Brown of Watford City, ND; Charla (Rich) Holt of Rapid City, SD; Chanda (Brian) Wahl of Red Lodge, MT; and Chet (Angela) Hobbie of Wasilla, AK; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his brothers and sisters: Verna, Jerry, Norman, JoAnn, Diane, Glenda, and Gordon.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kay; his parents, Oscar and Matilde; his sister, Marlys; and nieces, Beven, Stacy, and Lisa.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, from 3:00–4:30 p.m. at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, followed by a sharing time beginning at 4:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Interment will immediately follow at First Lutheran Cemetery in Brookings.

Roger will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
