Robert D. Vaselaar, age 81, of White, died Monday, December 22, 2003, at the Hendricks Hospital in Hendricks, Minnesota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 27, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in White, with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be by the Higgins-Jessen American Legion Post No. 88, of White. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Friday at the United Methodist Church. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. Robert Deane Vaselaar was born August 3, 1922 in White, South Dakota to David and Agnes (Carlson) Vaselaar. He attended country school and graduated from White High School. He attended radio school in Aberdeen before entering the U.S. Army on October 13, 1942, at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. He served in the Army Signal Corps in the European Theater during World War II, and was discharged from the service on April 14, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. On February 19, 1947, he married Jennie Hay at Lake Benton, Minnesota. Robert farmed until 1982, and worked for six years for Brookings County weed control. Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church in White. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. He was past commander of the Higgins-Jessen American Legion Post No. 88, past commander of Brookings County American Legion, and was post adjutant for thirteen years. He had served as quarter master of the White VFW.. Robert was a member of the National Farmers Organization and Farmers Union, had served as supervisor for Sherman Township for fifteen years, was on the board of the White Care Center for several years, and had been a member of the White City Council for several years. Robert enjoyed gardening, bowling, and working with the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Jennie, of White; eight children: Nona (Philip) Krier of Lake Benton, Minnesota, Terrie (Gary) Wallenstein of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Roberta (John) Knutson of White, Robin Shuman of Lake Benton, Gregory (Lila) Vaselaar of Huron, South Dakota, Caroline (Troy) Pregon of Packwood, Iowa, Barbara (Troy) Murphy of White, and Dana Vaselaar of Sioux Falls; 18 grandchildren; 16 grandchildren; and a sister, June (Jack) Mailey of Dell Rapids, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Vaselaar; a sister, Beverly Barrett; a son-in-law, Doug Shuman; and an infant great-granddaughter.
