Robert C. Schwartz, 76, died Friday, January 21, 2011, at the Brookings Hospital from complications due to ALS. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 25, at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce with Rev. Wayne Hjermstad officiating. Burial is in Trinity Cemetery at Volga. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. In lieu of flowers, memorials shall be donated to the ALS Foundation.
Robert was born in Volga, South Dakota, on May 4, 1934, to Ed and Clara (Crowell) Schwartz. His mother died when he was 4 years old. His father remarried a few years later to Anna Mae Nepodal. He was raised by his father, step-mother, and other family members in Oakwood Township. He attended school at Oakwood District #50 and high school in Bruce. After high school, he lived at home and farmed with his family. He was confirmed as an adult along with his father at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce. On June 5, 1955, he married Darlene Miller of Aurora. To this marriage, five children were born. In 1977, after selling their land, they built a home near Lake Oakwood. Then, in 1988, they moved to Brookings.
Robert was very active in his community, church, and outdoor activities. He served on Oakwood Township Board, Bruce School Board, Farmers Co-op Elevator Board, and over thirty years on the Grace Lutheran Church Council. He loved bowling, golf, and pheasant hunting. In late 2005, Robert was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) which took his life Friday evening.
He is survived by his wife Darlene of Brookings; his sons, Randall (Bonnie) of Wahoo, Nebraska, Rick (Conie) of Brookings, Roy Dean (Danette) of Herreid, Rhon (Debbie) of Alpine, California; and one daughter, Charlene (Ryan) Rohl of Eagle, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren (because he loved them equally, he had no favorite grandchild); brother Ralph (Donna Jean) Schwartz of Bruce; sister Mary Lu (Vince) Geraets of Brookings; brother-in-law Dean (Leolyn) Miller of Sturgis; sister-in-law Mavis Miller of Lakeside, California; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, half-brothers Harold (Bea) Schwartz and Walter (Janet) Schwartz.
