Robert J. Hintz, age 91, of Brookings, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at the United Living Community. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce, South Dakota, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Visitations will be held on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Robert Hintz was born on May 16, 1923, on a farm near White, SD, to Fred and Emma Louis (Steinback) Hintz. He attended White High School and graduated in 1941. While in high school, Robert played in the White Band. He continued to work on the family farm until he was married. Robert married Florence Lenning on June 5, 1943, in White. They lived on a farm northwest of White until Robert joined the United States Army Air Force. After his honorable discharge, the couple moved back to South Dakota where Robert worked in grain elevators, then as a food salesman, and later at 3M in Brookings as a guard. Robert was very musically inclined and enjoyed playing the guitar and piano. The family formed a small gospel singing group called the "Hintz Family." They sang at retirement and nursing homes and in churches. Together, Florence and Robert had six children. Florence passed away in 2008. Robert was an extremely generous and positive man. He had a deep faith and loved spending time with his family. Robert will be missed by all that knew him. Robert is survived by his children; Marlin (Carol) Hintz of Brookings; Marcene (Russell) King of Ocala, Fla.; Marvene (Don) Johnson of Arlington; Dan (Annie) Hintz of Aurora; Kim (Harley) Harms of Colman; daughter-in-law, Diane Hintz of Brookings; 21 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florence; son, David Hintz; granddaughter, Jill Hintz; and his brothers, Herman, Maurice, and Cecil.
