Obituary

Richard Kleinjan, age 82, of Arlington, SD, passed away, Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. on Friday, August 3, 2018, at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Volga Christian Reformed Church with burial to follow in Trinity Cemetery. Eidsness Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard Van Wyck Kleinjan was born on April 25, 1936, at Volga, South Dakota to Marion and Elizabeth (Bowne) Kleinjan. He received his education and graduated from Volga High School in 1954. Richard continued his education at South Dakota State University, where he earned a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1958.

Richard was united in marriage to Marjorie Vermeulen in Volga on June 4, 1958. They farmed for 38 years in Brookings County before moving to Arlington, South Dakota.

Richard was involved with many organizations throughout his life. He was an active member of the Volga Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and as a member of the Church Council. Richard was affiliated with the South Dakota Farm Bureau, Republication Party, and Arlington Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of Directors for the Brookings County Farm Bureau, South Dakota Farm Bureau, Brookings County Corn Growers, Brookings County Pork Producers, and also served as the Director for the Brookings County Soil Conservation District. He volunteered by transporting residents for the Golden Living Center in Arlington as well as for the Volunteer Service Bank. Richard enjoyed reading, traveling, making models, and collecting old tools.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Arlington; son, Marvin (Carla) of Chino, California; daughters, Barbara (Daniel) Cok of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bonny (Robert) Arseneau of St. Michael, Minnesota, and Joy (Frank) Howe of Brandon, South Dakota; 12 grandchildren, Jesse (Lisa) Kleinjan, Wesley (Mary) Kleinjan, Morgan Arseneau, Chelsea (Justin) Wipf, Forrest (Alyssa) Howe, Alexa (Joseph) Howe, Ross Howe, William Howe, Evan Howe, Makesha Howe, Lacey Howe and Ivy Howe; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Carolyn (Wayne) Nelson of California, John (Nancy) Kleinjan of White, South Dakota, Donald (Carol) Kleinjan, and Marilyn Kleinjan both of Volga; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.
