Richard Hartley, age 89, of Brookings, passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2021, at The United Living Community in Brookings.  A private family gathering in White will be held at a later date.  Eidsness Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard was born on October 7, 1931, in Brookings County, SD, the son of Benjamin and Blanche (Tyler) Hartley.  He received his education in rural county schools in Brookings County.  After receiving his education, he began farming with his father.  He continued farming on the home place until his retirement in 1997.  Richard was an exceptional artist, and frequently sold his cartoons to "The Dakota Farmer" and "The Farmer" magazines.

In his younger years, Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Robert (Viola) Hartley (former sister-in-law Clara Hartley), Kenneth Hartley, Chester (Olga) Hartley, and George (Zena) Hartley; and four sisters, Hazel (Delos) Dunker, Ruth (Maurice) Madsen, Dorothy (Donald) Quissel, and Lois (Wendell) Dunker.
