Richard “Dick” Anderson, age 80, passed away in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on September 19, 2026. A memorial service for Dick will be held at 11:00am on Friday September 25, 2026 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. A visitation will take place prior to the service from 9-11am. 

Dick was born on December 26, 1945, in Brookings, South Dakota, to Olaf and Pearl (Moe) Anderson. He grew up in Sinai, South Dakota. On July 10, 1965, Dick married Janice Johnson and moved to Brookings, South Dakota.

Dick worked as a brick mason for 40 years. He took great pride in his work, but his greatest pride and joy came from raising his two children, Shelly and Scott, and spending time with his four grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Dick had a lifelong love of fishing. He especially treasured his fishing trips to Canada and time spent fishing on the Missouri River with his son, grandsons, brother, and many close friends. These trips brought him great joy and created many special memories with the people he loved.

Dick was also an enthusiastic fan of anything connected to South Dakota State University. He especially enjoyed watching SDSU football, basketball, and volleyball games and cheering on the Jackrabbits.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his girlfriend, Sue Jones; his children, Shelly Anderson of Watertown and Scott (Rachelle) Anderson of Brookings; four grandsons, Derek Arcellano, Nicholas Gruber, Maxx Anderson, and Myles Anderson; two great-grandsons, Ashton Arcellano and Cameron Arcellano; three sisters, Lois Lanam, Dorothy (John) Alstrand, and Patty Tucker; one brother, Roger (Cindy) Anderson; and many other relatives and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Anderson; his parents, Olaf and Pearl Anderson; and his sister, Eunice Severson.

Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Dick’s honor may consider St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Ava’s House in Sioux Falls.

In honor of Dick and his love for the Jackrabbits, the family requests that those attending his funeral wear SDSU attire if they want.
