Obituary

Rachel Mittan, age 93, of Brookings, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Morningside Community Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations are from 4-8 P.M. Saturday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings and preceding services at the church. Rachel O. (Gisselbeck) Mittan was born November 7, 1909, on a farm northeast of Arlington, South Dakota, to Carl and Mary (Petersen) Gisselbeck. She attended grades 1-8 in country school and moved to Brookings in 1923 to attend high school. Rachel graduated from South Dakota State University in 1931 and has lived in Brookings since that time working at several business offices. She worked at AAA for 15 years, Lund and McCann Law Office for over 15 years, and was elected Register of Deeds for 12 years. She retired in 1975. Rachel was very active in the Republican Party and continued to be an active volunteer after retiring. Rachel married Theos Mittan on September 9, 1975, at the First Church of God. They enjoyed traveling and spending winter months in Texas. Rachel was a member of the Brookings County Red Cross where she served as secretary for 30 years. She was an active member of Morningside Community Church and served as Sunday school superintendent, secretary/treasurer for 18 years, chairperson of the church council, Sunday school teacher, and in the womens missionary society. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, playing games, sewing quilts, canning garden produce, visiting, and being active in her church. Rachel and her father, Carl Gisselbeck, were instrumental in starting the Church of God in Brookings. Survivors include her husband, Theos Mittan of Brookings; a stepson, Raymond (Shirley) Mittan, of Brookings; three step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Rebecca; and brothers Ezra, Pete, and Floyd. She was a big part of the upbringing of her sisters two children, Joyce and Melvin, after her sister passed away at an early age.
