Obituary

Phyllis A. Lakman, age 92, of Brookings, passed to her Eternal Home on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, January 29, at the Brookings First Assembly of God, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Memorials may be directed to Teen Challenge of the Dakotas in Brookings. Phyllis Arlene (Morrison) Lakman was born June 30, 1922, in White, South Dakota, to Worth "Slim" and Emma (Schmidt) Morrison. As a child she grew up in Brookings, graduating from Brookings High School in 1940. she married Herb Lakman on September 22, 1940. They spent three years in Pensacola, Florida, while Herb was in the Navy, from 1942 until 1945. After World War II they moved back to Brookings where they made their home. They loved ballroom dancing and after 25 years of marriage they became avid square dancers for 30 years. They traveled to many dances and conventions across the state and country. Phyllis had many jobs throughout her life. Both Phyllis and Herb operated the Depot Lunch and worked together at Morrison Wholesale, which was later changed to James Wholesale. While raising her family, Phyllis was employed at many retail and office jobs in Brookings. At age 71 she was employed at McDonalds as a hostess, passing out candy and cookies to the kids. It wasn't long before she became known as "Grandma McDonald." She retired in 2007 at the age of 85. Phyllis worked with Donna Ramsey to save the old Brookings High School, known as the 1921 building. This was very important to her and she spent many long, hard hours trying to save the "Old 21." And they did it! Phyllis was a member of the Firemen Auxiliary and the Brookings Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She was an active member of First Assembly of God and a big supporter of the Teen Challenge of the Dakotas. These young men will always have a special place in her heart. Phyllis kept in contact with her family, friends, and classmates on a regular basis. There wasn't a birthday or anniversary that went by that she didn't remember you with a card or phone call, sometimes both. And everyone knows how much she loved talking on the phone. She loved life to its fullest. Phyllis' love and laughter will be greatly missed but will live on in all of those whose lives she has touched. She taught us true love for others and Eternal Faith in the Lord. Survivors include her loving children, Doug (Pam) Lakman and Patti Lakman; grandchildren, Geoff and Jason Lakman; great-grandchildren, Cole and Malia Lakman; brother, Denton "Spud" (Bonnie) Morrison; sister, Barbara Driscoll; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and a very large extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb, of 57 1/2 years, and parents, Emma and Slim Morrison.
