Phyllis Bartling, age 99, of Brookings, died Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be held on Wed., Feb. 4, at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings with Rev. Kristie Berglund officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Visitations will be held at Eidsness Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church in Brookings or the SD Art Museum Acquisition Fund. Phyllis (Gray) Bartling, age 99, daughter of Earl and Jessie (Quinn) Gray was born in Parkston, SD, on January 25, 1916. A graduate of Parkston High School, she received her B.A. Degree from Yankton College in 1938. Following graduation, she was employed in the State Department of Education in Pierre, SD. In 1940, Phyllis married Lawrence (Lorne) Bartling of Brookings in St. Louis, MO. While her husband, an Army officer during WWII, served in the European theatre, she moved to Brookings in 1944. On his return they remained in Brookings to raise their family. Through the years Phyllis was actively involved with numerous community groups including Brownie and Cub Scouts, Job's Daughters, Order of Eastern Star, Jaycettes and AAUW. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 65 years, and was an ordained Deacon and member of the choir for more than 40 years. Phyllis was a Charter member and Past President of the SD Art Museum Guild and served as a Volunteer and Docent. Her service to the museum also included 12 years as a member and President of the Board of Trustees, and in 1994 she received the SD Art Museum Award. In 2002, she was honored as a 50 year member of P.E.O. Chapter B.A. of Brookings. Her special interests included music, art, sewing, letter writing, and she was a loyal fan of SDSU athletics and music department. She treasured time with her family and friends and her beloved cat, Maggie. Survivors include her 2 daughters: Susan (Les) Hansen of Dent, MN and Becki Bray, Sioux Falls, SD; her son: Dick (Kim) Bartling of Sioux Falls; son-in-law: Carl Thompson of Sioux Falls; brothers-in-law: Bob Bartling of Brookings and Herb (Sharon) Bartling of San Antonio, TX; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Maggie. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Virginia Bothern; her husband of 68 years, Lorne; her daughter, Kathy Thompson; and her son-in-law, Mike Best.
