Obituary
Pearl Nielson, 95, of Brookings, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, October 15, 2018, at Sinai Lutheran Church with burial to follow in West Sinai Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be 3-5 P.M. Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.
Pearl Arlene Nielson was born January 15, 1923, to Jacob and Josephine (Gunderson) Kvinlog on the family farm in Olso Township, South Dakota. She grew up near Sinai and attended country school. Pearl graduated from Sinai High School and later graduated from Beauty School in Sioux Falls.
On February 10, 1948, Pearl married Lewis Nielson at Pipestone, Minnesota. Pearl and Lewis farmed in Bangor Township. They raised two children on the farm, Barb and Steven. In 2006, the couple moved into Volga. Lewis passed away in 2011, and Pearl continued to make Volga her home until failing health caused her to move to Brookings. Pearl lived at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living, where she resided until the time of her death.
Pearl was a member of Sinai Lutheran Church, where she served on the circle and on the library board. She was a member of Extension Club and a life time member of the Sinai American Legion Auxiliary. Pearl enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, crossword puzzles, word searches, and reading.
Survivors include a daughter, Barb (Steve) Heupel, of Jamestown, North Dakota; a son, Steven (Gloria) Nielson, of Volga; five grandchildren: Troy (Lisa) Heupel, Amy (Steve) Bieber, Chad (Katie) Nielson, Casey Nielson, and Jennifer (Jeff) VanGerpen; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Ben and Milford; and four sisters: Alvina, Gladys, Adeline, and Angie.
