Paul C. Jones, 94, of Brookings, died Monday, January 5, 2004, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 10, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings with interment at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Huron, South Dakota. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with a Masonic service at 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may directed to the First United Methodist Church and the SDSU Foundation. Paul C. Jones was born July 8, 1909, in DeSmet, South Dakota, to Clarence A. and Mertie (Whitcomb) Jones. He attended country grade school in District No. 6, south of DeSmet, and he graduated from DeSmet High School in 1927. He continued his education at South Dakota State College, graduating in 1932, with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Science. On July 1, 1934, he married Charlotte Christie in Luverne, Minnesota. They made their home at Lake Andes, where Paul was assigned as an emergency agricultural agent. He was later transferred to Redfield, South Dakota, where he was assigned for seven years as the County Supervisor for the Farm Security Administration. In 1940 they moved to Woonsocket serving Sanborn County until 1947. He was then transferred to Huron, in a position with the Bureau of Reclamation in the land classification section, making irrigation feasibility studies in South Dakota and Wyoming. He was employed for 24 years at various positions in the Department of Interior, and authored the report on soils for the proposed Oahe irrigation project in eastern South Dakota. He retired in June of 1971., and continued to live in Huron until 1978 when they moved to Sun City, Arizona. They continued to live in Arizona for about nine years, returning to their native state in 1987, locating in Brookings. Charlotte died January 20, 1998. Paul was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Huron Lodge No. 26 A.F.&A.M., the Yelduz Shrine Temple in Aberdeen, and affiliated bodies of Masonry. He was active in the Boy Scouts and other community programs. Paul was deeply committed to his profession, his church and community. His love and pride for his family was ever present. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his succinct wit and wisdom. Paul is survived by his daughter, Marilyn and husband, James O. Pedersen of Brookings; a son, Lowell (Col. USAF, Ret.) and wife, Sandra of Fredericksburg, Virginia, a son, Wayne and wife, Patricia of Lisbon, North Dakota; a brother, Kenneth (Clara) of Longmont, Colorado; a brother, Loren, of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Charlotte, a sister, Aural Wipf, and a brother, Stephen.
