After a long battle with Parkinson's disease, Patti Monahan died on Friday, November 21, 2014, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings, South Dakota. Patti LaVern Nopens was born August 4, 1934, on a farm near Spencer, South Dakota, to Darrel and Malba (Pugh) Nopens. At the age of 16, Patti came to Brookings, where she graduated from Brookings High School in 1952. She attended South Dakota State College (now SDSU), where she met Maurice Monahan, who knew after their first date that he wanted to marry her. His wish came true on July 15, 1956. Patti was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved to cook and bake and feed her family. So much so, that any attempts to cook for her or treat her to a restaurant dinner were always politely discouraged. She was also a gifted artist. Her talents included drawing, needlepoint, weaving, knitting, and crocheting. She owned and operated the Knit Knook, a Brookings business dedicated to the fibercrafts, from 1972 to 1979. Following the sale of her business, she held a position in the serials department at the SDSU H.M. Briggs library until 1986. She was a longtime member of Ascension Lutheran Church, PEO, Extension Club, and the Fiber Arts weaving guild. Survivors include her husband, Maurice "Murph" Monahan, Brookings; three children: Michael (Dianna) Monahan of Spearfish, SD; David (Julie) Monahan of Wilmington, NC; and Susan (Mark) Bronson of Cheboygan, MI; six grandchildren: Caitlin Monahan, Iris Monahan, Elsa Monahan, Sophia Bronson, Maurice Bronson, and Zora Bronson. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, and her granddaughter, Erin Monahan. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, December 4, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. A memorial service will take place on Friday, December 5, 2014, at 10:30 A.M. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2030 3rd St, Brookings, SD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ascension Lutheran Church or The Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
